Vehicle drives onto Cedar Point boardwalk

SANDUSKY — A vehicle drove onto Cedar Point's boardwalk, striking numerous items before stopping near a resort gate. Before 6 p.m. Friday, a 35-year-old man from Blacklick, Ohio, allegedly drove onto the amusement park's walkway by GateKeeper and proceeded northbound. The vehicle struck four metal benches and a large cement cylinder, according to the police report. At the last bench, the vehicle suffered a flat tire and had disabling damage from the multiple collisions. It's not known if anyone received injuries as a result of the incident, however, the report doesn't note any. According to police, the man was asked why he drove on the boardwalk but had no valid reason. He allegedly had slurred speech, bloodshot and glassy eyes and sluggish motor skills, according to the report. His son and wife were on the scene. His wife said they parked in the lot and exited the car when her husband drove down the boardwalk, according to police. The son said he ran after the vehicle and, when it was stopped, took the keys from the ignition. The man was charged with OVI refusal after refusing to give a urine sample, reckless operation and failure to control a motor vehicle. As of Sunday evening, he remained locked up in the Erie County Jail on a $5,000 bond.
