LEGION BASEBALL: Post 83 bows out of district tourney

TIFFIN -- Sandusky Post 83 won one and lost one on Sunday. The win, a 7-2 victory over Wayne County, was the resumption of a game that started Thursday before being delayed by lightning in the sixth inning. It was delayed two more days by rain. The loss, a 13-2 five-inning setback to Cowle Post 151, knocked Post 83 out of the American Legion district baseball tournament at Tiffin University. Post 83 ended its season with a 6-17 record, but the young squad has a bright future, said coach Kyle Young. "We'll have a really good squad coming back next year," Young said. "They learned they can play baseball at a high level." Ryan Butler (Perkins) pitched the last 1 1/3 innings to seal the victory over Wayne County, striking out the side in the seventh inning. Post 83 built on its 4-2 lead before the multi-day rain delay with three runs in the bottom of the sixth. Tasavion Jones (Sandusky) had a two-run double and Owen Wright (Fremont Ross) added an RBI single. The elimination game against Cowle, which edged Post 83 in a tourney opener last week, didn't go as well. Cowle scored three in the top of the first before Post 83 answered with a run. Cowle added four in the top of the second to take control. "We scored in the bottom of the first and were fine, but after that it kind of went downhill," Young said. Dylan Wright (Fremont Ross) started on the mound for Post 83 because Zach Rickard (Perkins) couldn't throw due to an allergy attack, Young said. Post 83 also was missing leadoff hitter Cody Mamere (Huron), who had soccer obligations, and No. 3 hitter Tyler Walton (Perkins), who had his graduation party. Post 83 managed just three hits in the game, scoring on a Jones RBI single and a passed ball. Post 83 lost its tournament opener 3-1 to Cowle last Wednesday. That game originally was scheduled to be played last Monday before being pushed back two days because of rain. Tiffin played Cowle on Sunday night with a chance to win the tournament. Tiffin entered that game unbeaten while Cowle had one loss.
