Sandusky man dies in prison

SANDUSKY — A 22-year-old inmate from Sandusky died Tuesday of unknown causes at a state prison in Lorain County. Stevenson Shamar L. Stevenson was at the Lorain Correctional Institution, according to an inmate information page at the prison department's website. "The death is currently under investigation," said Sara French, a spokeswoman for the prison department. Stevenson was sentenced in November 2018 to serve 2½ years after accepting a plea deal. He was originally indicted by an Erie County grand jury on felonious assault, possessing a defaced firearm and other charges. The Register made a public records request to the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction on Thursday asking for copies of any incident reports or other public documents related to Stevenson's death. On Friday the state sent the newspaper an initial report that states Stevenson was found in distress and "several doses of Narcan" was administered. He died en route to the hospital, the report states. The state inmate information page states that Stenvenson's earliest possible release date from prison was January 2021. It also states he was denied parole in 2020.
