Sandusky Eagles spread wings with new spot

SANDUSKY — With a new home, the Sandusky Eagles Club hopes to fly high for many more years. This weekend, the club — in existence for more than a century — plans on hosting a grand opening at its fresh location: on King Street near West Madison Street. Members coordinated a cookout with live music and other entertainment as a way to celebrate a monumental occasion. Previously located on West Perkins Avenue, across from the former KBI plant, members relocated primarily due to financial reasons. "It was just way too big," club president John Neigel said. "We were spending more on utilities than anything else." Freeing up funds allows the Sandusky Eagles to further fulfill its mission of donating money to organizations aiding lesser-fortunate locals. "We are a fraternal organization, just like the Moose or the Elks, that is focused on supporting various charities," Neigel said. "We are huge into supporting diabetes research. We also support Cancer Services in town and are helping out with the Stuff the Bus event." The new location "has given us the ability to control our costs a lot more so that we can give more back to the community," Neigel added. People can visit the grand opening to donate toward these causes, Neigel said. About 400 people today belong to the Sandusky Eagles. Neigel encourages anyone to apply. No matter the day, they can stop by this new location and inquire. The King Street building does feature a kitchen with pub-style food. "We've been around for 108 years, and, by moving, we hope to continue that legacy," Neigel said.
