Better Half doubles up on diners

SANDUSKY — Better Half Family Diner's operations are now split into two. The longtime Sandusky restaurant on West Washington Street (U.S. 6) recently opened a second location, Better Half on the Bay, at Battery Park Marina on East Water Street. It's located outside, street level, right behind the main entrance. "We have always wanted to expand, and this is the best way to do it," restaurant owner Carolyn Abouelhana said. "We have our locals who keep us in business year-round, and we have our regular boaters who come and see us from April to November." Abouelhana then talked about why the waterfront spot makes good business sense. "Being in the marina was perfect because the people there are Better Half customers already," Abouelhana said. "This makes it easy for them, and they do not have to leave the marina for great food and coffee." At Battery Park, Better Half serves breakfast sandwiches, sausage gravy and biscuits for breakfast. Lunch consists more of wraps, sandwiches, hot dogs, Italian sausages and more. There are also appetizers, fish baskets, deli sandwiches along with other options. "We have quality food, good service and a beautiful view," said Abouelhana, noting it's open seven days a week. Expanding the Better Half also satisfies a long-time goal of Abouelhana and her late husband, Mahmoud, often referred to as "Moe." "The staff has all stepped up to help me keep the Better Half one of the best restaurants downtown," Abouelhana said. "Since then, most of the staff has been there, long-term, as well as long with the customers. I love Better Half because we are all family, and I have met so many friends. Even though it's seasonal, we will have some great months ahead at Battery Park to give the same type of food and service that the diner does."
