Murder suspect enters insanity plea

PORT CLINTON — An attorney for an Ottawa County man accused of killing his wife entered a not guilty by reason of insanity plea for his client. Attorney Esteban Callejas, of Bowling Green, entered the plea Wednesday for his client John Eichner, 43, of Genoa. Eichner faces 28 felony charges, including aggravated murder and corpse abuse, after a body believed to be that of his wife Amber Eichner was found in south Toledo. Callejas requested the court order a mental health evaluation for Eichner, according to a court filing. Judge Bruce Winters has not yet filed a formal order for the evaluation, but canceled two scheduled pretrial hearings and a jury trial date in July and set a new pretrial date for July 9. Prosecutors also haven't yet filed a response. John Eichner is accused of killing his wife Amber between April 14-17. A body believed to be Amber Eichner's — which is pending confirmation through DNA analysis — was found April 26 on a Toledo properly belonging to a friend of John Eichner's, law enforcement previously announced. Eichner remains in the Ottawa County Jail on a $1.5 million bond as of Thursday.
