Perkins boys, girls combine to win first Erie County Track Meet

CASTALIA — The first Erie County Track Meet was a success on many levels. Perkins won the combined boys and girls meet to take home the first traveling trophy. Several individual performances stood out. The rain held off. And last but not least, the well-run event ended by 8:30 p.m. after Kenna Stimmel's last attempt in the pole vault. Stimmel, Margaretta's junior standout, won three individual events and made up ground in the 4x100 relay to help the Polar Bears win that race and finish on top in the girls team standings. "It was nice to have different competition," said Stimmel. "I wish pole vault would've been better, but I sat for a long time." Stimmel cleared 13 feet, 6 inches in the pole vault, seven inches short of her state record. She won the 100 hurdles in 15.88 seconds, the 100-meter dash in 12.6 and anchored a 4x100 relay that was timed in 50.49. In that race, Stimmel was third when she grabbed the baton for the last leg. She passed a couple fast competitors — Huron's Izzy Cozzie and Perkins' Ashlyn Legando — to cross the finish line first. "I don't like to lose so I pushed myself to the finish and hope I have enough to pull it out," Stimmel said. Perkins used superior depth to walk away with the big trophy. The Pirates won only one girls event — Bella Lesch in the shot put — but had enough on the boys' side to offset Huron's depth. Chris Campbell won the 100 (11.47), long jump (21-6.25), ran a leg on the winning 4x100 relay and took second in the 200 to Huron's Conner Schaeffer. "They held us for a while (before the 100), but I felt strong from the beginning," said Campbell. "We have two or three guys who can run the 100 really well. It's nice to have that competition." Tyler Yingling won the shot put (46-11.75) and discus for the Pirates and Zane Rohrbacher took the pole vault (14-6). "I've been having a mental block where I throw good in warmups," said Yingling. "I've been throwing 49s in (the shot put) in practice. I gotta believe I can do it when I get in the ring and not stress about it. I'm definitely peaking when I need to; we'll get there." One of the most impressive runs of the night was turned in by Sandusky junior Amiyah Sturdivant, who easily won the 400 with a personal-best time of 57.75. Sturdivant has only participated in five meets this season, so she's still getting in top shape for the tournament series. "I was so nervous; I was shaking," she said. "My legs were feeling weak and I haven't been running a lot. I'm glad I ran the way I did today and I had my teammates here to lift me up. I was a hot mess before I ran." Sturdivant, who qualified for the state meet as a freshman, got out fast and was never challenged. "Everyone says I got out fast but I can get out faster. I could've had a better finish," she said. "I saw the finish line and slowed down because I didn't have anyone right behind me. I definitely can work on my kicks." Sophomore Jaden Carey was one of several standouts for Huron. Carey won the girls long jump (16-3) and the high jump with a personal-best of 5-2. "It was a big adjustment coming in from the grass so I had to rearrange my mindset," she said about competing in the high jump. "I wanted to have fun and it kept me up there." She won the long jump by 4 inches over Perkins standout Brenna Jenkins. "My first three jumps weren't looking too good, but my foot was perfect on the board in my last jump," Carey said. "It's pretty exciting. I came here with high hopes. It was cool to have an Erie County meet and be first in both jumps." The Huron girls quartet of Maggie Golling, Kaylee Parker, CeAujanay Grant and Cozzie won the 4x200 and 4x400 relays and Cozzie won the 200. Edison distance star Abby Lesniak won the 800 and anchored a winning relay and Sandusky's Myasia Matthews won her specialty, the 300 hurdles. Huron's Kennedy Schlessman won a close 3200. Margaretta freshman Olivia Saylor won the 1600 and ran a leg on the winning 4x100 relay. Vermilion's Ayden Bath swept both boys hurdles events and teammate Luke See won the 1600 and 3200. Edison's Cole Weilnau put together a fast finish to win the 800 and the Chargers' Dylan O'Dell won the high jump (6-2). Huron's boys won three of the four relays, including the last race of the night — the 4x400 relay. Zach Weyer led off before Sal Sherer and Schaeffer (who earlier won the 200) gave anchor Jacob Eck a big lead. Eck, who earlier won the 400, didn't slack off, though, turning in a PR split of 50.57. "I didn't turn around. I don't know how close they'll be behind me," said Eck. "That last lap, you just gotta push.
