Huron Schools levy rejected

HURON — Huron Schools officials will head back to the drawing board after Tuesday's primary election results. Voters defeated the five-year, 5.6-mill emergency replacement operating levy Tuesday, according to unofficial results from the Erie County Board of Elections. Had it been approved, the levy would have generated $2.1 million annually for day-to-day expenses including programming, curriculum-related materials and salary and benefits for employees. If the new tax issue had been approved, the owner of a $100,000 home would have pay about $196 in additional taxes each year. "While we are disappointed in the outcome of Issue 1, we are grateful for all the support our district receives throughout the community of Huron," superintendent Dennis Muratori said. "I would like to personally thank the countless volunteers who worked on and supported the campaign. Our team will review the election results and work with our parents and community to gather feedback on what we need to do better." "Despite the almost $2 million in reductions over the past several years, the district is at a point in which it cannot cut its way out of current revenue challenges," Muratori continued. "The board will ultimately decide when to return to the ballot. In the meantime, a cost savings plan was presented to the board of education in April, for the 2021-22 school year, in the event Issue 1 failed."
