Kisel sentencing delayed

PORT CLINTON — A man accused of raping a woman in Catawba Island had his upcoming sentencing hearing delayed to later this month.Paul Kisel, 47, of North Ridgeville, was indicted by an Ottawa County grand jury in August 2016 on two counts of rape, two counts of sexual battery and one count of burglary, all felonies, according to the Ottawa County Prosecutor's Office.Kisel allegedly entered another person's boat in Catawba Island Township in July 2016. While doing so, he reportedly engaged in sexual activity with a person who couldn't consent, according to the indictment.On March 16, Kisel pleaded down to charges of attempted burglary and gross sexual imposition as part of a plea deal. "There were some significant evidentiary issues involved in this case," Ottawa County prosecutor James VanEerten previously told the Register. "We ran everything by the victim and she wanted a resolution rather than a trial."Originally scheduled to begin Wednesday, Kisel's sentencing hearing was pushed back to May 31. Kisel's defense attorney Kevin Spellacy had a schedule conflict, which prompted the delay, according to court records. Kisel tried to recall that night in July 2016 during his plea change hearing in March."There was a lot of alcohol involved," Kisel said. "One minute I was having a fun time and the next minute I was waking up in my car with two police officers flashing lights in my face."Kisel faces a maximum prison sentence of four and a half years, although no prison time is mandatory.
