TRACK & FIELD: Margaretta's Kenna Stimmel sets state pole vault record

MILAN TWP. — Margaretta's Kenna Stimmel keeps setting the bar higher. The junior track & field star broke the girls state pole vault record at the Edison Invitational on Saturday, clearing 14 feet. Stimmel's vault broke the previous state record by six inches. North Royalton's Kristen Dent cleared 13-6 in 2015. Stimmel went 13-9 to break the state record before topping out at 14-0. She later missed at 14-3. She also set the Edison Invite record in the 100-meter dash, finishing the race in 12.42 seconds. The previous mark of 12.5 had stood since 1983. Stimmel added a third individual title in the 100 hurdles, winning that event in 15.69, and anchored the Polar Bears' winning 400 relay. Stimmel's record-setting day led Margaretta to the girls team title. The Polar Bears totaled 151 points. Huron (99.5) finished second and Edison was third (76.5) in the 14-team field. Margaretta's Olivia Saylor won the 800 and 1600 and was on a winning relay. The Bears' Jennifer Patrick won the shot put and discus. The Huron quartet of Maggie Golling, CeAujanay Grant, Kaylee Parker and Izzy Cozzie) won the 800 and 1,600 relays. Huron won the boys team title with 129.5 points, outdistancing runner-up Edison (112.5). The Tigers dominated the relays, winning all four. St. Mary Central Catholic's Mason Blank won the 800 and 1600.
