Inmate dies following suicide attempt on Thursday

FREMONT — Ryan Groot, the inmate who hanged himself in a cell Thursday at the Sandusky County jail, died at 5:20 p.m. Sunday, Sandusky County Sheriff Chris Hilton said.Hilton said an investigation into the suicide is ongoing, and the Lucas County coroner will perform an autopsy.The department is attempting to determine what led Groot to commit suicide. The Ohio Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation will visit the jail to look over the facility and review its policies.A corrections officer conducting a routine check found Groot, 32, around 11 p.m. Thursday.Groot, who had a cell to himself, appeared to have used a bed sheet tied to a ventilation system in the ceiling in the middle of the room to hang himself, Hilton previously said. Corrections officers performed CPR until paramedic's arrived and transported Groot to Fremont's Promedica Memorial Hospital. He was later transported to a Toledo hospital.Groot had been in the jail since early January for a probation violation, theft, receiving stolen property and breaking and entering.
