Police issue warning about fake Facebook page

PERKINS TWP. — The Perkins Township Police Department has warned people not to fall for an imitation Facebook page. A post on the fake page, using a real photo of Perkins police officers, claims users can claim a gift by clicking a link. Police say the link is fraudulent and people shouldn't click it. The fake page is titled "Perkins Townshi" — like "township" but without the letter "p." The real page is titled "Perkins Township Police Department." The phony account, which says it was created in February 2017 but only has posts dating back to this past February, started off sharing posts from the real Perkins police account and other county law enforcement agencies. Then on Friday, the fake page posted a picture of two Perkins officers — something taken off the real page — claiming anyone who saw the post were "winners," and instructed them to click a link to claim their "gift." The post claims to be "real and official," which police say is not true. Detective Joe Rotuno said his agency has reported the fake page to Facebook to have it taken down. The phony page appears to have been removed from Facebook during the writing of this article.
