Red Cross responded to Sandusky home fire

SANDUSKY — The American Red Cross of North Central Ohio recently responded to 20 home fires in four days, including one in Sandusky. During that time, the agency distributed more than $15,000 for immediate needs to more than 75 children and adults. Immediate needs included food and clothing for one adult and temporary lodging. Red Cross volunteers will continue to provide recovery assistance, resources and referrals to community partners for those affected by home fires. The Red Cross feeds and emotionally supports victims of disasters while teaching the public skills that save lives. The organization provides international humanitarian aid and supports military members and their families. The American Red Cross also supplies about 40% of the nation's blood. As a nonprofit, the Red Cross depends on volunteers and the generosity of the American public to perform its mission. According to the Red Cross, people can protect themselves and loved ones from fires by taking the following precautionary steps: • Install smoke alarms inside bedrooms and outside sleeping areas on each story of the home; Test the alarms monthly, and replace the batteries at least once per year. • Develop a fire evacuation plan with all household members, and practice the plan throughout the year, at different times of the day • Choose a location for members of the home to meet in the event of a home fire and make sure everyone knows where it is; The plan should include two ways to get out of every room. Consider escape ladders for homes on the second floor or above and for sleeping areas • Remove fire hazards from the home Additionally, the American Red Cross Emergency app is an all-inclusive resource that combines more than 35 emergency alerts to help the user stay safe. A mobile app for children, called Monster Guard, teaches children to prepare for emergencies at their home through an engaging game.
