Maca Root shaking things up in new spot

SANDUSKY — More than two years ago, The Maca Root Juice Bar & Eatery shook up downtown Sandusky's business landscape. And, judging by its early success, the new concept really took off with customers. "People wanted something new. They wanted something healthy," said Kelly VanCauwenbergh, who co-owns the business with her husband, Brad. No better example proves their point than on Saturday, March 13, when Maca Root hosted a grand opening in its new location: 216 E. Water St. The current footprint, about 1,100 square feet, nearly triples Maca Root's former location, down the street inside Paddle & Climb. "It was an amazing success. We broke our sales record," Kelly said about the grand opening. "Many regulars and newcomers came out to check out the new space and try some new menu items." Maca Root carried over its offerings, still making smoothies, juices, avocado toasts, protein bowls, salads, coffees along with vegan-friendly and gluten-free options. The new space, however, creates more opportunities for Maca Root. For example, employees can introduce specials on a more frequent basis, which, this month, include a shamrock shake for St. Patrick's Day, a chickpea and egg salad bowl and a peanut butter chocolate cold brew coffee. "Our bigger location allows us to feel more like a cafe than a grab-and-go smoothie shop," Kelly said. "Of course, grab-and-go and carryout are still available, but we believe that food is social, and many people want to sit over a coffee, smoothie or lunch with friends." Maca Root can also dabble in other ventures, such as meal prep and catering, "And the new additional prep room in the back allows us to do that, where, in the old shop, it just wasn't feasible," Kelly said. Upon moving, Kelly and Brad remained adamant about staying in Sandusky and, more specifically, downtown. The city government "takes a personal interest in helping entrepreneurs get started and having a vision for downtown Sandusky. That is what my husband and I look for when taking day trips to other charming towns," Kelly said. "The foodie experience — small coffee shops, quaint cafes, modern places that are cozy and classy — we wanted to be a part of that."
