Bite into Bavaria from downtown Sandusky

SANDUSKY — No need to fly to Germany. The tastes of Bavaria have traveled to Sandusky.The Bavarian Wagon is a new food truck recently debuting on Jackson Street Pier. It's parked next to Smokin' Heifer BBQ and expands upon the mobile culinary options available from downtown Sandusky.Sylvia Burns, Bavarian's owner, also runs the Bierkeller Pub in Bellevue. Many locals, who previously ate lunch at her restaurant, urged Burns to open a second establishment in Sandusky.While she doesn't want to run another restaurant, Burns came to a compromise by opening a smaller operation, with a food truck, but still promising to dish out tasty treats. Burns — who's originally from Bavaria, Germany, and moved to the U.S. when she was 23 — recommends people sample the sauerkraut balls and the schnitzel sandwich, which is a breaded pork loin.The Bavarian Wagon's most popular dish, Sauerkraut Balls, comes with homemade southwest dipping sauce. Everything is handmade including her apple strudel and potato salad. In true Bavarian fashion, the potato salad is made without mayonnaise and instead with salt, pepper, bacon bits and other ingredients.People should stop by "for the Bavarian food," Burns said. "You can't get that anywhere."With customers from Bierkeller Pub asking for certain items every week, Burns does plan to have weekly specials from the restaurant menu."I would really like to thank the city for their support.
