Sandusky resident, Lorain murder suspect arrested in Maine

SANDUSKY — A Sandusky resident believed to have fatally shot a 19-year-old man in Lorain last week is behind bars in Maine, according to Lorain police Lt. Ed Super. Augusta police found Matthew A. Mason, 18, in a local residence on Wednesday.Mason is slated to appear in an Augusta courtroom on Friday, Super said. It's anticipated that he will be extradited to Lorain County, where authorities filed a murder charge following the March 22 death of Ricardo "Rico" Calloway.Calloway was found dead in a residence on the 400 block of W. 22nd St around 7:45 p.m., as the (Elyria) Chronicle-Telegram reported at the time. Super said the Lorain Police Department is not yet releasing information as to a possible motive in the shooting.Authorities have been searching for Mason since last week. Sgt. Dana Newell, a detective with the Sandusky Police Department, confirmed that the local department worked with the Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force in attempting to track down Mason.Mason's last known address is listed in the 2000 block of Oldgate Road in Sandusky. Super said this is a family member's address and that Lorain police believe Mason spent a significant amount of time in that city."We've had a few different encounters with him," Super said.Police in Augusta were not specifically looking for Mason when they arrived at a residence where he was staying on Wednesday, according to a department media release. Officers had gone to the address to check on a 43-year-old man facing a local drug trafficking charge who had been released from custody on bail.Inside the residence, they found Mason, who was taken into custody on an outstanding murder warrant through the Lorain Police Department.Also into the residence law enforcement found Trevon Orman, 22, also a Sandusky resident.Orman and Larry Murphy, the local defendant, are charged with two counts of aggravated trafficking in schedule drugs, according to the release. Police found 17 grams of heroin and 12 grams of cocaine inside the residence.A woman was also inside the residence.
