PORT CLINTON At a recent public board meeting, Port Clinton Schools honored retired educator Jack Nitz by naming Port Clinton High School's media center "The Jack Nitz Academic Center." Before retiring last summer, Nitz was a district teacher, coach and administrator during a career that spanned more than 40 years. "True to Jack's style, he wanted to quietly retire in June. After four decades, we couldn't let that happen," superintendent Pat Adkins said. "He has been such a committed member of our team, respected educator, voice of reason, mentor and friend. He is Port Clinton City Schools and it is only fitting this exceptional center of PCHS be named in his honor." MILAN • The Berlin Heights Kiwanis chose Edison High School senior Katelyn Chenevey to be January's student of the month. Each honoree is chosen for their contributions to Edison High School and the Berlin Heights and Milan communities. Katelyn's school activities and accomplishments include Interact Club co-president; National Honor Society president; French club; French Honor Society; received a bronze medal for the National French test; varsity soccer (four-year letter winner, received Sportsmanship Award, Most Outstanding Defender, SBC honorable mention, district honorable mention and SBC All-Academic awards); drama club thespian, Outstanding Technician; Firelands Challenge co-captain; Youth Advisory Council; Lead 2 Hope and math club. She is also a math and writing lab peer tutor. Katelyn plans to attend Ashland University to study middle grades education for math and language arts. She is the daughter of Adam and Stephanie of Milan. • Several Edison High School students were named "Students of the Quarter" by school personnel. The initiative was started in 1990 by the Edison faculty and members of the Ohio Association of Public School Employees (OAPSE) union. The purpose of the program is to honor and acknowledge students who achieve significant success in various academic fields.
