Girl, 16, arrested after social media post causes alarm at Vermilion High School

VERMILION — A social media post referencing a "mass shooting" put Vermilion High School on edge this weekend. Deputies arrested the 16-year-old girl behind it on Saturday.The girl, who is not being named because of her age, described the post as "stupid" and a "joke" to the Erie County Sheriff's Office, according to a department report. The post, shared on the photo- and video-messaging app Snapchat, showed a 16-year-old Vermilion High School student holding what appeared to be a shotgun. A caption over the photo read: "did someone say mass shooting".The post caused alarm at Vermilion High School, where a concert was scheduled on Saturday. The school requested additional officers at the event in light of the post, according to a school resource officer's identified in the report.Deputies tracked down the boy in the photo at his home on Saturday. He explained that he and several friends were making a video for school, and that multiple friends had taken photos of him recently. He said he did not take nor share the photo, and did not know who did.He also told deputies that the gun shown in the photo is a BB gun.A friend at the residence identified the photographer as the girl, who was also there at the time. She admitted to taking and sharing the photo, but said that she "did not mean anything by it," according to the report.Deputies arrested the girl and charged her with aggravated menacing, a first-degree misdemeanor.
