William H. Hirt

DANBURY TWP. — William H. Hirt, 90, of Danbury Township, died Tuesday, March 14, 2017, in the Ohio Veterans Home, Sandusky.He was born Aug. 23, 1926, in Vickery, the third son of Harold "Sprocky" Hirt and Dorothy (Last) Hirt. He married Marian J. Bergman on Oct. 18, 1947, and she preceded him in death on Dec. 10, 2016. Bill was raised in Vickery and went to school at Townsend High School, where he graduated as the valedictorian of his class in 1944. He was a veteran of the United States Army, having duty in the Philippines and with a military police unit in Tokyo serving as a prison guard for "Tokyo Rose," Tojo, and other high-ranking Japanese officials. In 2010 he had the opportunity to enjoy an Honor Flight to Washington, D.C., with several other veterans from northwest Ohio. He was also a rural letter carrier with the post office, retiring after 30 years of service, and was elected to two terms as president of the Ohio Rural Letter Carriers Association, serving from 1985-1989.As for his dedication to his community, he was a Boy Scout Master for the Peninsula Scouts, served five terms as a Danbury Township Trustee and was a past president of St. Paul Lutheran Church, where he was a remarkable tenor in the church choir.Surviving are his sons, David (Jan) Hirt of Marblehead, William (Terrie) Hirt II of Bay View, Robert Hirt of Sandusky; daughter, Marla Hirt of Marblehead; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Marian; brothers, Rollin, Warren and Luther Hirt.Following cremation, funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 22, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 541 Church Road, Lakeside-Marblehead, where visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Tuesday and from 9 a.m. Wednesday until the time of the service at 11 a.m. Interment will be in St. Paul Lutheran Church Cemetery, Danbury. The Rev.
