Elijah Rodgers: a cut above the rest

SANDUSKY — Most 8-year-old boys sought a PlayStation 5 or a jersey of their favorite football player on Christmas. But that's what makes Elijah Rodgers — who's working toward acquiring his own gifts of a new lawnmower, weed whacker and a leaf blower — not only different but truly special. Elijah, who attends Sandusky Intermediate School, willingly volunteers his time to help out lesser-fortunate community members spruce up their yards at no cost. Throughout this past year — no matter near his East Parish Street home or as far away as Lions Park — he frequently assisted city residents who otherwise couldn't afford regular upkeep of their yards. This would include single parents, veterans and those dealing with disabilities. "I like doing it," Elijah said. His landscaping duties often involve cleaning out flowerbeds, shoveling snow, raking leaves and cutting grass. "He started out helping my dad, Vincent (Elijah's grandfather) and then did the neighbors' lawn," Elijah's mother Vanessa Randleman said. "And it just grew from there." To date, he's beautified 44 properties. Once he reaches 50, he'll obtain these new items on his holiday wish list through a donation made by the national youth-based organization Raising Men/Women Lawn Care Service. Currently, he's getting by tending to yards with some older, outdated equipment. "He'll use those new items to take care of more lawns," Randleman said. Elijah recently received some acclaim from the organization, by participating in its 50-Yard Challenge, on social networking sites. A member, through a series of photos, spotlighted Elijah. The organization "is the union of an ordinary yard maintenance service and the commitment to establish an inspiring program to keep our youth on a positive path while learning and understanding their value in society," according to its mission statement. Elijah's parents, Vanessa and Eric Rodgers, beamed with pride talking about their son's benevolence. "He is learning a lot," Eric said. "He understands it's a privilege to help out others who are in need." Added Vanessa: "He is so ambitious and motivated to do this. Every day he wakes up and wants to do a yard or help someone.
