Margaretta girls win four events, take district team title

PERKINS TWP. — Kenna Stimmel set a district pole vault record and Grace Bias broke the school record in the shot put Saturday as the Margaretta girls won four events to earn the Division III team title in the meet held at Firelands Regional Medical Center Stadium.Stimmel, who also won the 100-meter dash (12.67 seconds), had a top jump of 12 feet, 5 inches to win the district pole vault title by 3 1/2 feet over runner-up Brooke Albanese of Gibsonburg.Stimmel was the anchor of the Polar Bears' winning 400 relay (50.10) and added a second-place finish in the 100 hurdles (15.75) to qualify to regionals in four events.The top four finishers in each event advance to the regional meet, which starts Wednesday at Heidelberg University.Kylee Cheek, Cassidy Cheek and Brittany Kingseed ran the other three legs of the championship 4x100. Kylee, Cassidy, Jana Berg and Kingseed were third (1:50.52) in the 4x200 to move on as well.Bias, who won the discus on the opening night with a school-record toss of 130-10, hit a top throw of 39-0.5 Saturday, winning the title by nearly two feet over Aliza Dauterman of Lakota (37-1.5).In the individual running events, Cassidy Cheek placed third (27.62) in the 200 to advance.Margaretta scored 79.5 points, beating out St. Mary Central Catholic's 65.5. New London was third (64) and St. Paul fourth (57).For the Panthers, Tre'Jeen McCarty, Annie Milkie and Ashley Huntley all qualified to regionals in four events.McCarty was runner-up in the 200 (27.51), Milkie was third in the 100 dash (13.11) and Huntley was second in the 100 (12.74). Together, the senior trio, along with senior Isabella Fischer won the 4x200 (1:47.16) and was second in both the 4x100 (50.40) and 4x400 (4:13.41).For New London, Savannah Shaver was runner-up in the 800 (2:24.35). Dana Gustely took third in the 800 (2:29.35) and Marisa Molnar was third in the shot put (36-9). Taylor Howell was the fourth Wildcat to advance, taking fourth in the 300 hurdles (50.12).St. Paul's Lily Dowdell won the 3200 (12:00.74) and was third in the 1600 (5:21.83). She also ran anchor for the fourth-place 4x400 that included Abbie Stine, Sarah Matlack and Camille Endsley.Western Reserve qualified two relays, as well as McKenna Woodruff in the 400. Woodruff had a district-winning time of 1:00.49. She anchor the fourth-place 4x200 (1:51.27) with Aliyah Perez, Avery Tubbs and Morgan Spettle. Woodruff ran the third leg of the first-place 4x400 (4:11.54) that also featured Tabi Pausch, Perez and Spettle.The lone other area regional qualifier was Danbury's Shana Marie Richar, who took fourth in the 100 hurdles at 16.98 seconds. New London boys earn runners-up, advance nineThe New London boys didn't earn any district titles Saturday, but the Wildcats did have nine athletes advance to regionals, finishing as team runners-up to Ottawa Hills by a slim 88-84 margin.Carson Coey and Curtis Joppeck were third in the 300 hurdles (42.99) and 1600 (4:38.39), respectively, while Mitchell Joppeck placed fourth in the 400 (52.33). Coey, Mitchell Joppeck, Curtis Joppeck and Austin Reed were runners-up in the 1600 relay, running a 3:34.45.New London's Mason Bess, Parker Ruble, Jaden Keys and Jacob Allen were fourth in the 4x200 (1:35.18) and Cayden Hofheins was fourth in the discus (129-6).St. Paul took third with 58 points. Davis Hedrick earned the district sweep in the throwing events, winning the discus Saturday with a top toss of 168-0.The Flyers' 4x200 of Cam Caizzo, Adam Baker, Ethan Blair and Treg Smith had a district-winning time of 1:34.13. Zach Stine took second in the 1600 (4:37.34) and Noah Avendano was third in the 3200 (10:14.53) as seven total St. Paul athletes advanced to Heidelberg.Western Reserve got a pair of runner-up relays in the 4x200 and 4x100. Randal Humphrey, Riley Suhr, Jacob Jarrett and Cody Benesh ran 1:34.77 in the 800 relay, while Suhr, J.J. Weisenberger, Humphrey and Benesh ran the 400 relay in 44.71.Jarrett was the lone Roughrider to move on in individual events, placing second in the 110 hurdles (16.74).SMCC's Cam Volz was runner-up in the discus at 150-6 at Perkins to qualify to regionals in both throwing events.
