Sunday update: 3 charged in fatal Sandusky shooting

Update (noon Sunday) SANDUSKY — One man died and three others face charges in connection with a Saturday morning slaying in Sandusky. As of late Sunday, all three suspects allegedly involved in the death of East Madison Street resident Tavon Myers, 41, remain locked up in the Erie County Jail. Due to their charges, each suspect faces multiple first-degree felonies, Sandusky Municipal Court Judge Erich O'Brien mandated no-bond orders for all three. They're all scheduled for an arraignment on Monday. On Saturday, the shooting happened just after 11:30 a.m., in the 600 block of E. Madison St. near the Meigs Street intersection. Through the early stages of an ongoing investigation, Sandusky police Chief Jared Oliver told the Register what allegedly happened. A robbery somehow involving all three suspects occurred at Myers' home on East Madison Street. Myers and at least two of the suspects began arguing over issues relating to drugs and money. During a confrontation, both Myers and the suspects discharged weapons at one another. It's not known who fired first. Amid this crossfire, a bullet struck Myers, causing him to die. The suspects then ran away, which began a search to find them. About 5 minutes later, police received a call regarding a shooting victim in the 200 block of Center St. Police made a connection between this shooting victim, Lorain resident Lavell R. Chapman, 25, and his possible involvement in the Madison Street shooting, labeling him as a suspect. Authorities took Chapman into custody as they continued searching for the other two suspects. Just before 9 p.m. Saturday, Oliver said the other two suspects were found in Lorain. They were taken into custody and brought back to Erie County for questioning. At about 11:45 p.m. Saturday, police charged Lorain resident Exavier T. Cruz, 22, and Sandusky resident Jalen D. Jones, 20, for their alleged roles in Myers' death. The charges each faces: • Chapman with complicity to aggravated murder and aggravated robbery, both first-degree felonies • Cruz with aggravated murder and aggravated robbery, both first-degree felonies • Jones with complicity to homicide and aggravated robbery, both first-degree felonies People can still provide anonymous tips about the incident by calling 419-627-5863. Update (11:45 p.m. Saturday) Police charged two additional suspects in connection with the shooting: • Lorain resident Exavier T. Cruz, 22, with aggravated murder and aggravated robbery, both first-degree felonies • Sandusky resident Jalen D. Jones, 20, with complicity to homicide and complicity to aggravated robbery, both first-degree felonies Previously, police charged Lorain resident Lavell R. Chapman, 25, with complicity to aggravated murder and aggravated robbery, both first-degree felonies. As of 11:45 p.m. Saturday, all three remain locked up in the Erie County Jail on a no-bond order. Original story (4:15 p.m. Saturday) SANDUSKY — One Sandusky man is dead and another suffered injuries as a result of a Saturday morning shooting in the city. Just after 11:30 a.m., the deadly incident occurred in the 600 block of E. Madison St. Through the early stages of an ongoing investigation, Sandusky police Chief Jared Oliver relayed what allegedly happened: • A robbery occurred at an East Madison street residence. • A dispute between the home's resident, 41-year-old Tavon Myers, and at least two others occurred over issues relating to drugs and money. • During a confrontation, both Myers and the suspects discharged gunfire at one another. It's not known who fired first. • During the crossfire, Myers was struck and died. • About 5 minutes later, police received a call regarding a shooting victim in the 200 block of Center St. • Police made a connection between this shooting victim, Lavell R. Chapman, 25, and his possible involvement in the Madison Street shooting, labeling him as a suspect. • Authorities took Chapman into custody and are searching for two other suspects. • Detectives are treating the incident as a homicide. They filed charges against Chapman for complicity to aggravated murder and aggravated robbery. • As of 4 p.m. Saturday, Chapman is locked up in the Erie County Jail on a no-bond order. • The Bureau of Criminal Investigation is assisting Sandusky police with processing the crime scene. Oliver thanked all the law enforcement officials who played a role in this incident. "I am very proud of the patrol officers and detectives. It is because of their hard work we were able to quickly apprehend one of the suspects and obtain warrants for the other two.
