Man shoots himself outside home

UPDATED WITH FULL STORY 10 p.m.FREMONT — A man shot himself Thursday afternoon as Fremont police pulled up to his home on the 700 block of Walnut Street, police said.Police received a 911 call at 4:36 p.m. from a woman reporting a man with a weapon, said Chief Dean Bliss.Officer Vincent Bocardo was the first officer to arrive on scene. Other officers were moments behind him."A female left the house and was backing out of the driveway as the officer pulled up," Bliss said.Andrew Anstead, 23, was walking out the front door holding a shot gun, Bliss said.Bocardo ordered Anstead to drop the weapon. Anstead, instead, shot himself."The officer never fired a round," Bliss said."It all happened in a matter of seconds," said Police Captain Ty Conger.The Attorney General's Bureau of Criminal Identification was called to take over the scene and investigate the death."We asked BCI to investigate to document everything," Bliss said. "It was in front of our officers so we wanted someone else to come in," Bliss said.The police will need to wait for the autopsy results to determine if Anstead was under the influence of anything.Rosa Macias, who lives two doors down from Anstead, arrived home moments after the shooting to see police cruisers at her neighbors home."He was a young man. I used to see him working on cars," Macias said.She has seen police at the home about six times in about a year, she said.Conger confirmed police have been called out to the home before.
