Norwalk woman's obituary raps Trump

Staunch Democrat Elizabeth "Liz" Smith, 87, who died Feb. 13, has been spared a source of pain, according to the obituary that appeared in Wednesday's Sandusky Register and also online."Liz is smiling now, not to be living during the Trump presidency," the obituary states.Smith's daughter, Deborah Lucal of Norwalk, explained Wednesday that her mother had seen a similar statement in another obituary and was amused by it."She had seen that in somebody else's obituary and kind of made a note of that," Lucal said. "She doesn't like the man, she never has, thought he was a pompous ass."Smith died Monday surrounded by her family in Stein Hospice Care Center.A graduate of Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Smith earned a bachelor's degree in music education.Her eventful life included working as a switchboard operator for many years, serving as a 45-year volunteer for her local Girl Scout organization and a great deal of travel, including in her retirement years.The obituary stated, "She enjoyed traveling, especially to Yellowstone Park and heli-hiking in the Canadian Rockies, whitewater rafting on the New River in West Virginia and the Snake River in Idaho, Orient Express trip from Vienna to Paris, entire tour of Nova Scotia including Cape Breton."Explaining the trip to Canada, Lucal said, "They take you on a helicopter and drop you on a mountain and you hike."This was when Smith was in her 70s, Lucal said.Smith often traveled with a friend, retired teacher Jane Morner.Read Smith's obituarySmith was a member of the Huron County Democratic Party and also was a poll worker.She touched many people with her longtime work supporting the Girl Scouts, Lucal said."To this day, I have people coming up to me, 'I remember Mrs. Smith, we would go camping when it was 20 below'," Lucal said.The Girl Scouts and the Democratic Party weren't the only places where Smith was active. She had many other causes, including a Salvation Army soup kitchen, United Fund and visiting shut-ins at nursing homes.At St. Mary Catholic Church, she served on parish council, renovation committee, finance council, funeral luncheons and parish festival committees, according to her obit. She also was an office aide at church, former Eucharistic minister and served on parish council.Friends may call Friday at Evans Funeral Home, 314 E. Main St., Norwalk, with a rosary to be recited at 3 p.m. and visitation until 8 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary Catholic Church, Norwalk.The obituary says, "Visitors are requested to wear red to celebrate Liz's life.""That was her favorite color," said Smith's son, David Smith.A long time ago, she said that when her funeral was held, she wanted everybody to wear red, he said.Asked if he was ready to wear the right color, Smith said, "I do now. I went and did some shopping last night."Lucal already has plenty of red clothing."Red is my favorite color, too," she said.She said she also remembered her mother saying what she wanted people to wear at her funeral."She said, when I go, don't you dare wear black.
