Sandusky cancels virtual Santa visits

SANDUSKY — A week after announcing a scaled-down Christmastime celebration, Sandusky officials begrudgingly eliminated the remaining, yet pinnacle, public attraction. "Due to the rise in COVID-19 cases in Erie County and the state of Ohio, the Sandusky Community Celebrations Council has decided to cancel the virtual visits with Santa in (Washington Park's) Cookie House for 2020," according to a city statement. Officials originally announced they would allow children to see a virtual Santa Claus, situated on a TV screen inside the small holiday structure. But even with social distancing, it's not a feasible option at this time, officials said. The preliminary plan involved people standing in a spaced-out line before entering, limited to one family at a time. "This was a very difficult decision, but the safety of the public and safety of our volunteers are our first priorities," the statement read. "Children are still encouraged to write Santa a letter or draw a picture and drop them off in the mailbox outside the Cookie House located in Washington Park," it continued. "Our volunteers will make sure they get to Santa in a timely manner." Among some other notable, related changes: • The annual Holiday Lighting Ceremony, traditionally taking place on the Friday after Thanksgiving, "will be done virtually at the City of Sandusky — Government Facebook page," Werling said. "Residents and those interested are encouraged to watch, starting at 6:10 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 27." • There won't be any scheduled events downtown "due to the state and county guidelines of no gatherings of more than 10 people," the statement said. In the past, people would gather on the Friday after Thanksgiving for a parade, which would welcome Santa Claus, a concert, outdoor market and more. In a related incident, and on another unfortunate holiday note, Sandusky's 50-foot-tall Christmas tree situated at Schade-Mylander Plaza toppled over Sunday due to strong winds. "Since we don't have the same foundational strength as we had before, and because of this damage, we plan to reinstall the top 20 feet to 25 feet of the same tree and anchor it with concrete blocks and rope," city public works director Aaron Klein said. "We will restring the lights and decorate the elfin version of this tree as beautifully as ever so residents can start their holiday celebration on time," Klein said.
