Huron's Makenna Schafer repeats as All-Ohio first-team pick

Huron senior outside hitter Makenna Schafer was with her mom Jessica when she got the news Sunday that she had made the All-Ohio first team in Division III for the second straight year. "She saw it on her phone, opened it up and said 'congratulations, you should be proud,' " Schafer said. "The thoughts going through my mind were that hard work does pay off and I'm grateful to get the opportunity twice." Schafer, who will play collegiately at Ohio University, has recorded 260 kills in 25 matches this season for the Tigers, who are 23-2 and ranked No. 2 in the state. "It's a great honor," Huron coach Don Wood said. "She worked hard this year at changing a couple things and sacrificed some numbers. Some of the shot-making she's doing now really helped a lot." Schafer and the Tigers will play Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy at 7 p.m. Saturday in the state semifinals at Vandalia Butler High School. Huron will have two all-state players on the court for that match. Senior setter Georgi Moody, who has 799 assists, 148 kills and 42 serving aces this season, was named to the All-Ohio second team. Moody, who will play collegiately for Wheeling University in West Virginia, was a third-team selection last year. Wood feels like Moody -- who was voted Player of the Year in District 6 -- also had what it takes to make the first team. "Generally when you get player of the year in the district you're going to make it, but there wasn't a single setter on the first team. It was the same way in Division I this year. It's the nature of how the poll voters want to vote. "Georgi's had a fantastic year. The way she's grown as a leader and a volleyball player has been tremendous. I feel she should've been a first-teamer as well, but you know what, they both have the same goal in mind." Padua Franciscan in Division I and Monroeville in Division IV were the only teams across all four divisions with two first-team selections. Huron, Ottawa-Glandorf, Liberty-Benton and Tuscarawas Valley all had one first-teamer and one second-teamer in Division III. Tuscarawas Valley plays Independence in Saturday's first D-III semifinal. Bellevue's Taylor Baxter, a senior outside hitter who plans to play for Ohio Northern University, was named to the second team in Division II. Perkins senior setter Mollie McVeigh was a third-team choice in Division II and was named District Player of the Year. The Pirates' Elizabeth Ziegler, a powerful junior middle hitter, and Bellevue libero Kami Hay were honorable mention All-Ohio. Edison's Lilli Schuster and Olivia Vitaz were honorable mention selections in Division III. In Division IV, Monroeville senior outside hitter Kylee Brooks and junior setter Hannah Lyons were named first-team All-Ohio and St. Paul's Dyllan Knoll was honorable mention. Huron's Wood (Division III) and Monroeville's Kendra Snook (Division IV) received Coaches Achievement Awards. The Ohio High School Volleyball Coaches Association poll voters select the All-Ohio teams. All-district teams are chosen prior to the All-Ohio teams. In District 6, Moody joined McVeigh (Division II) as a Player of the Year.
