Swearingen beats Miller

HURON — State Rep. D.J. Swearingen, R-Huron, won a full two-year term to the Ohio House Tuesday, carrying both counties in the House District 89 race. Swearingen turned aside Democrat Alexis Miller, who had hoped to put the seat back into the Democratic ledger. The district, once held by Democrats, has now seen three Republican lawmakers in a row win electoral victories. Unofficial results Tuesday showed Swearingen winning the race 34,998 to 26,033 and carrying both counties in the district by a comfortable margin. With 62 of 62 precincts reporting, unofficial results showed that Swearingen carried Erie County by 21,100 to 17,150. And with all 36 precincts in for Ottawa County, he won 13,898 to 8,883. Swearingen was named to the House to replace former state Rep. Steve Arndt after Arndt's retirement. President Donald Trump carried both Erie and Ottawa counties by a comfortable margin Tuesday night, so Miller found herself swimming against a Republican tide.
