Production stops at Huron IAC plant

HURON — International Automotive Components (IAC) ceased production at its Huron factory. A company statement said it decided to "idle" the factory on Sawmill Parkway after the end of an agreement to build parts for an automaker. The manufacturing group is the world's leading supplier of automotive components and systems for major automakers like General Motors. Its Huron plant built automotive components like instrument panels and interior trim. Automakers put out bids to companies like IAC to make components for their vehicles. The agreements normally last until the model gets revamped or is discontinued. The company wouldn't release employment numbers but a 2015 Register article indicated the plant once employed 750 workers, but dwindling business opportunities diminished that number over the years. In February, International Automotive Components confirmed it would stop operations at the factory by the end of the year. "We have provided clear, direct information to our employees throughout this process, including helping workers transition to new jobs and hosting IAC organized job fairs," the company said. "We have also worked with members of UAW Local 913, who ratified an agreement that included severance packages and job relocation benefits on Feb. 2, 2020." According to the company's statement, the majority of production ended in August. Production has now stopped completely at the factory, but the company didn't provide a precise date for when it ceased. The property, however, will remain with the company for the time being. Since International Automotive Components chose to idle the factory and not entirely close, there remains a possibility it could reopen and restart production down the line if the company secures another deal with a customer.
