Huron County sheriff running on his record

NORWALK — Huron County Sheriff Todd Corbin doesn't need an opponent in this year's election to show voters he's a hard worker. Corbin, who is running unopposed, spoke about his qualifications and accomplishments since becoming sheriff in 2017. "I hope the people of Huron County see me for who I am; I am a man that believes in God almighty and I am constantly working to serve their needs," he said. Corbin considers changing the culture of the sheriff's office as his biggest achievement so far. "We went from being a self-serving office and returned to being servants of the public," he said. Corbin said divisions of his department — like road patrol, dispatch and corrections — used to operate separately without much communication. He said he encouraged cooperation between the various divisions of his office under the watchwords "One team, one fight." "I often make the statement, 'If I don't like the way the office looks, I change people or attitudes," Corbin said. "As sheriff, I have made it a point to demand the best out of my employees from a professional and personal perspective. My father always taught me that the man or woman makes the uniform." Corbin also touted developing a good relationship with the county's commissioners along with being fiscally responsible. "If I can't justify (an) expense to myself or the taxpayers, I don't buy it," he said. "Our practice is that we purchase needs, not wants, and I know that the citizens of Huron County appreciate that." The sheriff listed some other achievements of his office during his first term: • Increased staff by more than 10 percent • Mended relationships within the local law enforcement community • Partnered with other state law enforcement and federal law agencies • Upgraded county dispatch services • Bought new body-worn cameras for deputies and purchased 12 new police cruisers For his second term, Corbin said he's striving to "raise the bar" for his department and achieve perfection. "We may not be able to reach that goal, but we will have done our very best to reach it," he said. "As I continue my tenure as sheriff, I will continue to do my very best and increase my knowledge and skills for the position that's been entrusted to me."
