PREP ROUNDUP: Margaretta's Kennedy shoots 77 at SBC tourney; Vermilion volleyball knocks off Bellevue

FREMONT — Margaretta senior Carson Kennedy shot a 77 at Fremont Country Club on Thursday to win River Division medalist honors at the Sandusky Bay Conference boys golf tournament. Margaretta's team finished at 356, good for fourth place in the Bay behind Willard (347), Port Clinton (349) and Huron (356). Willard had four players shoot between 83 and 89. Huron's Danny Demos finished with an 80 to lead the Tigers. Adam Murray carded an 86. Noah Shaw paced Port Clinton with an 82. Brayden Spencer added an 87 for the Redskins. Mike Wadsworth shot an 84 for Margaretta. Oak Harbor placed fifth at 360 and Edison was sixth at 401. Grant Belcher shot an 84 for the Rockets while Matthew Pounds led the Chargers with a 93. In the Lake Division, Norwalk's Ian Minor was the medalist with an 80, leading the Truckers to a first-place showing. Norwalk, which got an 83 from Brayson Malson and an 84 from Isaac Scheel, easily won the team title with a 335. Perkins was second at 350, followed by Bellevue (357), Clyde (360), Tiffin Columbian (366), Vermilion (376) and Sandusky (540). Dyson Leffler (81) and Sam Siegel (86) led the Pirates. Hudson Strayer shot an 85 for Bellevue while Max Yates (86) and Mason Gurney (87) paced Clyde. In the River Division, Lakota's Kyleigh Dull shot a 74, the best score of the day across all three divisions. Lakota tied Old Fort at 355 and won the River title on a tiebreaker. Danbury finished fourth with a 366. The Lakers were led by Grayson Clark (81) and Gavin Clark (87). St. Mary Central Catholic did not compete due to a positive COVID test on its roster. The team is in quarantine, meaning the Panthers will miss out on sectional play next week. VOLLEYBALL Vermilion 3, Bellevue 1 VERMILION -- Vermilion pulled into a third-place tie with Bellevue in the SBC Lake Division by beating the Lady Red 25-18, 25-22, 24-26, 29-27. The long fourth set was decided when the Sailors got kills from Cam Colahan and Maddie Stout to seal the match. Jenna Peters led the Sailors, who matched Bellevue at 4-3 in the Lake, with 20 kills and nine blocks. Kaitlin Colahan added 16 kills. Defensively, Stout led with 20 digs and Hallie Habermehl had 31 assists. Lexi Logsdon added 19 assists and 11 service points. For Bellevue, Taylor Baxter had 23 kills and 16 digs. Emma Bollinger had 17 digs, 15 assists and was 15-16 serving. Bailey Fisher added 13 assists and was 20-21 serving. Huron 3, Port Clinton 0 HURON -- Huron swept Port Clinton 25-10, 25-17, 25-12 to improve to 11-1, 4-0 SBC Bay. Makenna Schafer led the Tigers with 13 kills. Sophie Lee added seven. Georgi Moody was 20-for-23 serving with eight aces. She added 30 assists. Alizia Lagando was 19-21 serving and added 11 digs. Huron, ranked No. 3 in Division III, plays at Division No. 18 Rocky River Magnificat on Monday. Monroeville 3, St. Paul 1 MONROEVILLE — Monroeville dropped its first game in league play, but slugged past St. Paul 25-23, 25-13, 21-25, 25-23 in a Firelands Conference showdown. The two teams were tied at 21 in the fourth set, but errors by St. Paul gave the Eagles (12-0, 8-0 FC) a cushion. Karlie Rudolph tallied a kill for the Flyers (7-3, 6-2), but an error gave Monroeville match point. A serving error kept St. Paul alive, but senior Kylee Brooks put down one of her 17 kills to send the Eagles to a huge win. Reece Kluding and Brooks each had 14 kills for the Eagles. Braylee Wise had 25 digs and HannahLyons had 48 assists and 16 digs. Presley Stang led St. Paul with 17 kills. Sarah Matlack had 18 digs, seven points and three aces.
