Run or walk to support SFD's shoe fund

SANDUSKY — Finishing a 5K or a fun run is no doubt tough.But just imagine how difficult it is for children who walk, jaunt or sprint on their feet all day, everyday without the proper footwear.To provide some comfort and care for area kids, the Sandusky Fire Department is once against hosting a charity run/walk event. It's scheduled for Saturday morning at the downtown fire station, 600 W. Market St.Registration begins at 8 a.m. for both races:• The 5K costs $20, and the race starts at 9 a.m. • The kids 1K fun run costs $1, and it starts at 8:45 a.m.T-shirts are available for the first 80 registrants.All proceeds from the event will benefit the Sandusky Firefighters Charity Shoe Fund, which purchases shoes for local children.The fund "started in 1956 when William Strouse donated $500 to the fire department," Sandusky interim fire Chief said.The donation's purpose: Buy footwear for children in need across the local community. Ever since then, the fund has aided countless children in Sandusky.D'Amico said qualifying children receive a voucher valid at Arthur's Shoe Tree, 1144 Cleveland Road, in the Sandusky Plaza, where children can pick out any footwear of their choosing."Supporting The Sandusky Firefighters Charity Shoe Fund is an amazing opportunity to give children who have endured a tragic, life-altering event (such as a houses fire or family financial struggle) a small sense of comfort through a new pair of shoes," Sandusky fire Lt.
