MacArthur Park is named

75 years ago, 1942: "MacArthur Park" was the name chosen for the U.S. Housing project under construction at the old fairgrounds. Mrs. Bernice Jameson, Ogontz-st., chose the winning name in a contest sponsored by the Register-Star-News. She would receive a $25 U.S. War savings bond. She said Gen. Douglas MacArthur was the hero of the hour, so it seemed appropriate to name the site after him.50 years ago, 1967: Jayne Mansfield, the curvaceous "smartest dumb blonde" of movies, was killed when the chauffeured convertible in which she was riding smashed into a slow-moving truck on a winding road near New Orleans. Miss Mansfield, her lawyer and a chauffeur were killed. Her three children were slightly injured.25 years ago, 1992: Two powerful earthquakes, one of them the strongest in 40 years, rocked Southern California, killing one child and injuring more than 150 people. The first quake, 7.4 on the Richter scale, radiated out from a remote stretch of the Mojave Desert east of Los Angeles and was felt as far away as Denver. The second quake, about three hours later, registered at 6.5 magnitude.10 years ago, 2007: Union members at Ohio Veterans Home said administrators and the state weren't doing a good job serving those who served. Their dissatisfaction was displayed on picket lines in front of the OVH gates. The union said cuts in dietary programming, restrictions on food and beverage choices, cuts in nursing services and reduction in therapy services were hurting the veterans overall quality of life and care at the home.
