Pier's pavilion can open for certain events

SANDUSKY — Jackson Street Pier's newest amenity is now open — but, for the time being, only for certain functions. Sandusky city commissioners recently gave the go-ahead for specific events allowable under Gov. Mike DeWine's COVID-19-related orders to take place from this multipurpose structure. For instance, they'll permit wedding ceremonies and receptions, funerals and wakes but not birthday parties, graduation celebrations, family reunions or baby showers. But when DeWine's restrictions do end, officials want to host these get-togethers, and others, there. The building derives from many suggestions given by community members, who desired such a venue when speaking about possible pier concepts at public forums from a few years ago. "We wanted to have another space for programming, especially one on the waterfront," city recreation superintendent Jason Werling said. "And, with the recreation department, we hope to have year-round programming there as soon as we can." The Mylander Pavilion — named after the late philanthropist George Mylander, who's namesake foundation contributed funds in helping transform Jackson Street Pier, an $8.1 million initiative — houses a kitchenette, refrigerator, ice maker and multiple bathrooms.
