Updated: SHS grad dies in accident

Update Monday, 4 p.m. The Crawford County Sheriff's Office identified the three others involved in the Friday afternoon crash. Also in the car were Morgan Hodgkinson, 19, of Sandusky, a 15-year-old and Joseph Wells, 20, of Sandusky, who was driving the vehicle, according to an updated news release from the sheriff's office. Both Hodgkinson and the 15-year-old were taken to hospitals via medical helicopter. Wells was also taken to a hospital. The news release did not give an update on their current conditions. Original post, Sunday SANDUSKY — A 19-year-old Sandusky woman died in a single vehicle crash on Friday afternoon in Crawford County. Hailie Leal, 19, a Sandusky High School graduate, died at the scene. A GoFundMe account has been created by a family friend to help pay for funeral expenses. A news release from the Crawford County Sheriff's Office states the accident took place at 4:36 p.m. Friday on Ohio 602, south of Henry Cooper Road, northeast of Bucyrus. The press release states a 2010 Mazda with four people and a dog inside was southbound on Ohio 602. It was passing southbound vehicles when it crested a hill. The driver swerved back into the southbound lane to avoid northbound traffic, lost control of the vehicle, and went off the west side of the road, hitting a ditch, shearing off a telephone pole and turning over three times. At least one passenger and the dog were thrown from the vehicle. One of the passengers was pronounced dead at Bucyrus Hospital and the dog died at the scene. All of the car's occupants were taken to the hospital. Hailie Leal's Facebook account states that she attended Sandusky High School. According to a post, she was a member of the Class of 2019. Friends expressed grief over her sudden death. A Spanish teacher, Sam Kudrin, called Leal "one of my favorite students" and posted funny selfies Leal took of herself after she borrowed Kudrin's phone. The GoFundMe account was created by Theresa Gibson of Sandusky, who explained that Leal's parents, Katie and Jason Walton, are her best friends. "She was such a beautiful soul. The family of course is dealing with the unexpected and last thing they planned was having to make plans for a funeral for such a young soul," Gibson wrote. The sheriff's office did not release the names of the people involved in the crash, but Sandusky residents identified Leal as the person who died in the crash. Groff Funeral Home announced Sunday it is handling the funeral arrangements for Leal.
