Setting sail

SANDUSKY — She'll soon leave her hometown. But, when she does move to Columbus soon, Susan Schultz's roots will remain anchored on Sandusky's shoreline. Schultz, a multimedia artist, recently agreed to donate a stainless steel sailing sculpture. It now belongs to the city government, which helps further its ongoing public art initiative highlighted by other sculptures, murals, abstract pieces and lighting schemes spread out citywide. "It's been at my home since 1999," said Schultz, who lives on the Cedar Point Chaussee, referencing when the piece was made. "Since I was moving, I thought it would be something that I could give to the city for the beautification of downtown." Schultz is no stranger to local public art pieces. Beginning in 2005, she worked with other community activists and designed the "Path to Freedom" sculpture at Facer Park. The sculpture, surrounding monuments and other pieces there honor Sandusky's involvement in the Underground Railroad movement. "Public art is a draw for people who are interested in art and culture," Schultz said. These pieces "can help bring more people down to the city. I just hope people can get some enjoyment out of it." It's not yet known when or where this sailing sculpture could get installed. Greg Voltz, the city's assistant planner, however, indicated this piece would go somewhere on the waterfront due to its nautical theme. Voltz worked with Schultz on her most recent donations. "Susan is a great talent, and the public arts and culture commission is excited to find a home for this sculpture in the near future," Voltz said. "This new sculpture, along with Susan's 'Path To Freedom' sculpture, greatly enhance our waterfront and put art in a prominent place to be viewed by all."
