O'Connell released from prison

SANDUSKY — Former Sandusky County sheriff's detective Sean O'Connell is out of prison. O'Connell was released from prison on July 2, according to Ohio Department of Corrections spokesperson Sara French. He was convicted in September 2018 on a felony evidence tampering charge stemming from the Heather Bogle investigation and was sentenced to two years in prison. Visiting Judge Patricia Cosgrove, who issued O'Connell's prison sentence, denied multiple requests from him to get an early release. The most recent request was for emergency judicial release in April. O'Connell's full prison term would have expired this September. But he received days of credit for time spent in county jails, and got additional time shaved off his sentence for taking classes while incarcerated in the Lorain Correctional Institution. "He was given nine days of jail time credit. He has also received 5 days of earned credit a month since February 2020 for attending education for a total of 30 days, so that is what caused his release date to decrease to July 2," French said. O'Connell's former boss, former Sandusky County sheriff Kyle Overmyer, also completed a prison term earlier this year. The former sheriff was sentenced to four years in prison in 2016 on charges including theft of drugs. He spent the final portion of his prison sentence at a halfway house.
