Updated: Man arrested after police pursuit

Update 5 p.m. HURON — A man was arrested on multiple felonies after he allegedly stole one, or possibly two, cars and caused four car crashes during a pursuit with law enforcement Wednesday. Terrel Stanley, 26, of Chagrin Falls, Ohio, was charged with aggravated robbery, theft of vehicle and aggravated vehicular assault. Stanley allegedly sparked a chase with Perkins police early Wednesday afternoon after a report of a shoplifting incident, according to Perkins police Chief Vince Donald. The car Stanley allegedly drove, a blue Hyundai, is being investigated as a possible stolen car. Perkins police called off their pursuit but then learned there was a crash at Cleveland Road and Remington Avenue, and then another crash involving the same car on Cleveland Road east of Perkins Avenue, Donald said. The Hyundai caught fire after crashing into another car, and no registration was found, Erie County Chief Deputy Jared Oliver said. Stanley allegedly got out of the car and stole another vehicle after pulling its driver out — and then allegedly hit the driver while backing up the vehicle — and continued to flee. The driver suffered hip and leg injuries, but those injuries weren't serious, Oliver said. Stanley crashed the allegedly stolen car into another vehicle at Cleveland and Hawthorne roads in Huron, according to a Huron police report. He fled the scene of that crash and then went off an embankment and crashed again, this time at Cleveland Road and Strowbridge Drive. Stanley then allegedly ran on foot to the area of Ashland Avenue and into Lake Erie before being apprehended by Huron police. He was transported with injuries to Firelands Regional Medical Center by Huron Fire. He was not booked into the Erie County Jail as of 5 p.m. Original post HURON TWP. — A multi-vehicle crash closed a portion of Cleveland Road east of Perkins Ave. Wednesday afternoon. A blue Hyundai believed to be stolen out of Perkins Township was involved in a vehicle pursuit with law enforcement Wednesday. After the Hyundai turned from Perkins Ave. to Cleveland Road, it struck another vehicle, State Highway Patrol trooper Chris Capizzi said. The stolen vehicle then caught on fire, but Huron fire soon put it out. The driver of the stolen Hyundai left the vehicle and took over another vehicle at the scene in a possible carjacking. The driver of the other vehicle was not seriously injured. It's not known if anyone from the carjacked vehicle or the stolen vehicle was injured, Capizzi said. The suspect, who has not yet been identified but it believed to be a New York resident, was involved in a shoplifting incident at a Perkins Township business. A pursuit started with Perkins police early Wednesday afternoon, which led to first crash on Cleveland Road. The suspect is believed to have stolen another vehicle. It's believed the suspect fled on foot in Huron. The suspect was arrested by Huron police and taken to Firelands Regional Medical Center for possible injuries.
