Sandusky band still marching

SANDUSKY — Sandusky High School's marching band operates like a well-oiled machine. And with the continued success of the football team, their season marches on.Since the Blue Streaks qualified for the playoffs, students in Sandusky High School's marching band are still preparing to perform at halftime. Usually, musicians perform the season's final band show packed with music and drills chosen by seniors. In the past, students have also voted on which songs to play from this year's previous shows.During halftime on Friday, fans can expect to hear Sandusky's band play "Hang on Sloopy," "Smoke on the Water, "I Want You Back." The marching band will practice their songs and drill Friday morning before stepping onto the field in Clyde's Robert J. Bishop Stadium later that night.Some members of the marching band are also practicing music for concert and symphonic bands. Additionally, some are involved in a Bowling Green State University honors band and have rehearsals this week, SHS band director Daniel Klohn said."It's just one more thing to juggle," Klohn said about marching band season. "For the playoff games, we don't always know how far we go, so we like to give kids the opportunity to do honors bands and other activities," Klohn said.Like the football team, band members will sometimes encounter familiar faces beyond regular-season play. "This year's been fun — all the band directors are pretty amicable with each other," Klohn said. "Seeing Norwalk's band director twice was nice."As the football team has advanced in the playoffs, Sandusky's band has occasionally shared the field with competition marching bands and performs in places they've never visited."It's nice to go to different places, like Medina, for football. I've never been there before," Klohn said. Students don't seem to mind their season going longer than normal. "They're excited that the football team is in the playoffs," Klohn said.
