MILAN Edison High School student Kaylee Ries was chosen by Berlin Heights Kiwanis to be May's student of the month. Kaylee's school activities and accomplishments include marching band; wind ensemble; pep band; solo & ensemble; Ohio University 110% award; band council president; French club vice president; French Honor Society president; Le Grand Concours silver, bronze and honorable mention recipient; National Honor Society president; class president; student council; math club vice president; math tutor; Lead2Hope; Edison Works representative; Buckeye Girls' State delegate (state board of education); softball; tennis (First Team all-SBC, holds school doubles records for career, season, league wins and coach's award); bowling; student athlete leadership team member; school musicals (Big Fish & Honk!); Student of the Quarter (for physical education and science) and the honor roll. She's also been a Erie County Democratic Party volunteer and planned the "It Takes a Village: Fighting the Opioid Crisis" panel discussion event last year. Kaylee plans to attend Bowling Green State University to study business and psychology. She is the daughter of the late Jeff Ries and Carrie and Donald Knicely of Huron. Put-in-Bay eighth-grader Emil Michael won the Ottawa County Spelling Bee in February. Provided photo/PUT-IN-BAY SCHOOL PUT-IN-BAY In February, three students represented Put-in-Bay School at the Ottawa County Spelling Bee: eighth-grader Emil Michael, sixth-grader Elias Wright and fifth-grader Emma Michael. The three students competed against thirty other spellers from local schools. Emil finished in first place, Emma placed ninth overall and Elias placed 18th overall. All Put-in-Bay students in grades 7-12, along with Kelleys Island's only high school student, completed science projects based on criteria set by the Ohio Academy of Science. Projects were judged by fifteen professionals, all with various backgrounds in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics).
