Update: Teen arrested for allegedly shooting child, 8

Update 11 a.m., Sunday, Dec. 15.PERKINS TWP. — Police have taken a 13-year-old into custody for allegedly killing an 8-year-old child in what appears to be an accidental shooting.Just before 3 p.m., Perkins police and EMS received calls requesting an ambulance in the 5000 block of Memphis Ave. for a gunshot victim. But they found out someone was already driving the victim to the hospital in a personal car.The ambulance met the vehicle on Columbus Avenue and took the child the rest of the way to Firelands Regional Medical Center.Medical personnel pronounced the child died at the hospital, Perkins police Chief Robb Parthemore said. The victim's identity won't be released until family members are notified.The investigation is still in its early stages, but detectives believe a 13-year-old relative shot the victim at the Memphis Avenue home."While we believe this may be an accidental shooting after conferring with the Erie County Prosecutor's Office the 13-year-old was taken into custody and transported to the Erie County Juvenile Justice Center," Parthemore said.The investigation remains ongoing, and police are trying to discover the origin of a firearm recovered from the scene of the shooting."Our thoughts and prayers go out to this family for such a tragic event especially this time of year," Parthemore said.Original post 7:34 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 14.Child, 8, dies of gunshotPERKINS TWP. — An 8-year-old child died of a gunshot wound Saturday, according to Perkins police Chief Robb Parthemore.Just before 3 p.m., Perkins police and EMS received calls requesting an ambulance in the 5000 block of Memphis Ave. for a gunshot victim.
