Caterer prepares meals for local heroes

SANDUSKY — A local caterer is offering up nutritious meals to health care and essential workers during the coronavirus pandemic. Sweet Potato Catering, like many companies, experienced a decrease in business as the COVID-19 strain of coronavirus caused the cancellation of events. "Instead of closing my doors and waiting for the pandemic to subside, I knew I wanted to use this opportunity to do some good," Sweet Potato owner Katie Korobkin said. "I knew I was in a position to help our community in some way during this challenging time. I truly believe that food and acts of kindness are essential, especially at a time like this." Korobkin started her "Support our Local Heroes" campaign, which delivers individually packaged boxed meals paid for by donors to people on the front lines of the pandemic, including health care workers, first responders and people with essential jobs. Each box includes a balanced meal and a personalized thank you note from the donor of the box. "'Support our Local Heroes' was created out of a desire to express the support and gratitude of the community to those who are dealing with this virus head-on," Korobkin said. Sweet Potato has delivered more than 900 meals to local hospitals, police and fire departments, funeral homes, stores, volunteers at food drives and more. And she's continuing to get more and more donations each day. "There has been an overwhelmingly positive response from this campaign," Korobkin said. "The support has been truly heartwarming. I am so grateful to the community for allowing me to organize and be a part of the donations to our local heroes."
