Barry Bagels rolls out of Sandusky

PERKINS TWP. — A local bagel shop moved its operations from Perkins Township to Catawba Island Township.Barry Bagels closed its location on Milan Road in Perkins Township near Five Guys.The Catawba Island location opened on Dec. 7, and the Perkins location's final day of business was this past Sunday, the location's franchisee Ben Isaacson said.Barry Bagels began when Barry Greenblatt opened the Bagel Place in Sylvania, Ohio in 1972. The company now has 13 Barry Bagels locations spread across Ohio and Michigan.The Perkins location was announced by Barry Bagel's corporate office in 2015 and opened later that year in the same plaza as Rapid Fire Pizza. It was one of its first franchises."It's been around a long time, but this was one of their first franchises and I think it didn't have the momentum or name recognition it needed to keep going in this market," said Kula Hoty Lynch, the cooperate counsel for Hoty Enterprises. "We knew they had been struggling and we tried to work with them, but it just wasn't working."Hoty owns the plaza on Milan Road and was Barry Bagels landlord until they vacated the space.Isaacson said questions about why the franchise decided to move out of Sandusky would have to be directed to the corporate office.
