UPDATE: Greenwich woman ID'd as Lake Erie Construction worker killed on highway

(UPDATED at 5:15 p.m. Friday)Authorities continue to investigate a fatal crash involving a construction worker that occurred just before 9 a.m. today on U.S. 33 in Union County's Jerome Township.The victim has been identified as Teresa M. Howell, 24 of Greenwich, the Union County Sheriff's Office reported.The semi that allegedly struck Howell is a 2004 Kenworth truck that was hauling a 2014 Great Dane trailer. The company that owns the tractor and trailer is Estep Express Incorporated located in Mansfield, Ohio. The tractor and trailer were found in a warehouse area at 1580 Williams Road in Columbus about 90 minutes after the crash. The semi was reportedly to be hauling perishable food items.The preliminary investigation has revealed the driver of the tractor trailer drove over several orange safety cones that had been placed in the righthand lane of U.S. 33 eastbound, west of Ohio 161. The cones had been placed to protect workers from the Lake Erie Construction company while maintenance was performed on guardrails along US Route 33.The driver of the tractor trailer has been identified, but not charged.The investigation is on-going, and the results will be forwarded to the Union County Prosecutors Office for presentation to a future Union County grand jury.The Union County Sheriff's Office, the Multi County Crash Investigation Team, the Union County Coroner's Office and the Ohio State Highway Patrol Motor Carrier Enforcement Unit all are investigating the fatal crash.* * *DUBLIN — A Lake Erie Construction Company worker died this morning after being hit by a tractor-trailer on a Union County highway .The 24-year-old woman was doing guard rail work on U.S. 33 when she was hit and killed by the semi, according to ABC 6. The TV station in Columbus didn't identify the woman.The Union County Sheriff's Office received an emergency call concerning the accident about 8:59 a.m. Deputies, along with the Jermone and Washington township fire departments, responded to the scene on U.S. 33, west of Ohio 161. The Union County Coroner's Office also was called.After the woman was hit, the semi continued eastbound on U.S. 33 and the woman was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the sheriff's office. Detectives' preliminary investigation indicated the unidentified driver drove into the safety cones along the road and hit the victim. Investigators said the semi kept going, but it was unclear if the unidentified driver fled or didn't realize the woman was hit, according to ABC 6. Authorities later were able to catch up to the driver for questioning.U.S. 33 eastbound was closed between U.S. 42 and Ohio 161. One lane opened by 12:15 p.m. All lanes were open by 1:30 p.m.The Multi-County Crash Investigation Team, Union County Coroner's Office, state Highway Patrol, Ohio Department of Transportation and Marysville Police Department assisted the sheriff's office.Teresa Howell is shown with her sons in this undated Facebook photo.
