The idea of combining a world-class golf course, a high-end hotel, convention center, condos and retail shops along Lake Erie on a 235-acre tract near Rye Beach Road in Huron was extraordinary. The estimated $4.25 million spent to build Sawmill Creek Lodge — about $26 million in today's dollars — was an enormous investment in Erie County history at the time, and it opened Sept. 26, 1972.
