Bellevue freshman football game cancelled after bullying report

BELLEVUE — Bellevue High School didn't play its freshman football game scheduled for Thursday at Perkins after receiving a report of bullying on the team, Bellevue Schools superintendent Kim Schubert told the Register on Friday afternoon.Schubert wrote in an email that the decision to cancel the game was made because "we anticipated possible disciplinary action for a few players, and for that reason, would not have had enough eligible players for the game.""We were already limited with the number of players we have available due to injury," she added.Perkins also had a limited number of players available. Perkins athletic director Matt Smith said the game was canceled Thursday morning."I talked to them Wednesday and we were going to try to play but it didn't work out with their numbers," Smith said. "I think we had 12 kids who could play. I called them to cancel and they did not say, 'No, we have to play.' "Schubert said the Bellevue freshman team will resume practice Monday and will play its final two games: Oct. 13 at Tiffin Columbian and Oct. 20 at home versus Sandusky."The allegations are being addressed as we do not tolerate bullying," Schubert said. "We are appreciative to the student who reported the behavior and we are in the process of resolving the issue."She continued: "This was an isolated incident involving only a few students, not the entire team, but we needed time to sort out all of the facts of the situation."Schubert would not comment on how the players will be disciplined but said they will be "educated further on the impact of bullying."No varsity football or junior varsity football players were involved, only freshmen, she said.Schubert said police were not involved and there "was no criminal activity."
