Savory frozen treats return for Milan Melon Festival

MILAN — The quintessential local summer festival kicks off this weekend in Milan.And some of the festival favorites — the melon ice cream and sherbet — is only available this weekend. According to Tofts Ice Cream, its popular dessert — cantaloupe cream and watermelon sherbet — takes about three days to make."Its a big hit for the Milan Melon Festival. We try to reflect it off of us more towards them," said Chuck Meisler, president of Toft Dairy Ice Cream Parlor. "We make the ice cream exclusively for the festival, which makes it special because you can only get the ice cream once a year."Festival patrons routinely form long lines to snag one of the delicious frozen treats."We have to be careful where we place the ice cream stands because the lines are so long and we want a comfortable flow for the crowds," festival organizer Nichole Harder said.
