Sandusky's own Dan May headlining Bicentennial Concert

SANDUSKY — The singer-songwriter from Sandusky could hardly compose himself when learning those from his hometown wanted him to lead a very special concert set for Sunday."Heading to Ohio this week to sing for the celebration of the bicentennial," Dan May wrote on his Facebook page. "I have the honor of being selected to represent the city of Sandusky for their Bicentennial Concert ... with the Firelands Symphony Orchestra, which means that I'll be singing my songs with a full orchestra backing me."May, the orchestra and others will perform at the free Sandusky Bicentennial Concert, which starts at 7 p.m. Sunday from the Sandusky Bay Pavilion, 605 E. Water St.Paying tribute to the city's 200th anniversary, the multi-act show also features local gospel choirs and area high school bands. Additionally, there's a fireworks finale show to cap off the night. People can also buy food and drinks from various vendors.Dan May, who's originally from Sandusky, is among one of several acts performing at the Sandusky Bicentennial Concert.May — a renowned musician who has six critically acclaimed albums to his name — couldn't be happier about participating in the concert."It's something I'm not taking for granted," said May, a 1977 Sandusky Central Catholic School graduate who now lives in the Philadelphia area with his family. "I've had the good fortune of being able to play my music in front of people for a while now, and I've always felt very lucky to do so. That people appreciate and value something I've created is a validation that means everything to me. Validation is what feeds our soul. So, I'm here to say that, this one isn't just another show. It's not just another opportunity to sing my songs."This is one of those once-in-a-lifetime moments. My city only celebrates its bicentennial once, and they only asked one singer-songwriter to represent them: me. I'm not sure how or why that happened, but I'm treating this opportunity with the dignity and respect that it deserves.
