Police searching for vandals of DeVos's yacht

HURON — Police are still reviewing security camera footage from the Huron Boat Basin after a yacht owned by the U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos was vandalizedPolice responded to the boat basin just before 6 a.m. on Sunday after the crew of the SeaQuest Yacht reported it was vandalized, according to a Huron police report.The captain told police when the crew woke up at about sunrise, they discovered the boat had been untied from the dock and was adrift. Before they were able to regain control of the ship, it struck the dock with its starboard section, the report states.The collision caused several large scratches and scrapes to the yacht which the captain estimated would cost between $5,000 and $10,000 to repair. The crew said they didn't see anything suspicious before the yacht was untied."Somebody definitely untied it, we just don't know who yet," Huron police chief Bob Lippert said.Police are reviewing security footage from the surrounding area to see if they can see anyone approaching the yacht, but they haven't found anything as of Thursday afternoon."We're still poring over the security footage from the boat basin," Lippert said."The concern from the city's standpoint is that's a very expensive yacht and we want to show the patrons who come to the city that we'll provide a good service," Huron city manager Andy White told the Register Tuesday. "This is a blemish on the city we'd rather do without and we'll seek to have justice done for this act."The SeaQuest is roughly 163 feet long and is valued at about $40 million. It's one of 10 boats DeVos owns with her husband, the former CEO of Amway, according to a Newsweek article. Their net worth is estimated to be $5.1 billion.DeVos wasn't in Huron when it was unmoored from the dock, according to CNN.President Donald Trump nominated DeVos for the position of Secretary of Education on November 23, 2016.
