DeVos yacht rams dock

HURON — A yacht owned by the U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos was vandalized Sunday while docked in the Huron Boat Basin.Police responded to the boat basin just before 6 a.m. after the crew of the SeaQuest Yacht reported it was damaged, according to a Huron police report.The captain told police the crew discovered when they woke up that the boat was untied from the dock and was adrift. Before they were able to regain control of the ship, it struck the dock with its starboard section, the report states.The collision caused several large scratches and scrapes to the yacht which the captain estimated would cost between $5,000 and $10,000 to repair.The police are still investigating the incident and reviewing security footage from nearby cameras to see if anybody can be seen in the boat basin around the time the boat was unmoored.The concern from the city's standpoint is that's a very expensive yacht and we want to show the patrons who come to the city that we'll provide a good service," Huron city manager Andy White said. "This is a blemish on the city we'd rather do without and we'll seek to have justice done for this act."The SeaQuest is roughly 163 feet long and is valued at about $40 million. It's one of 10 boats DeVos owns with her husband, the former CEO of Amway, according to a Newsweek article. Their net worth is estimated to be $5.1 billion.President Donald Trump nominated DeVos for the position of Secretary of Education on November 23, 2016.
