Business burns on Ohio 19

widman@sanduskyregister.comA massive fire engulfed a backyard barn Saturday afternoon just a few miles south of Oak Harbor, completely destroying the facility, which was used to house a masonry business.No one was inside the building, located at 3547 S. Ohio 19, when the fire ignited at about 2:30 p.m., according to a dispatcher with the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office.Multiple agencies battled the vicious blaze for more than two hours, and a portion of Ohio 19 was closed during this time.Ultimately, firefighters were unable to save the structure. By Saturday night, only its scorched roof and frame remained. The fire left three nearby cars charred and damaged, and the home at the listed address also sustained heat damage.The cause of the fire is not yet known.A state fire marshal was called to investigate the scene.Two firefighters from Portage Township sustained non-life threatening injuries at the scene, according to Chief Mike Almendinger.One firefighter rolled his ankle, while another sustained burns from a propane tank.No one else was injured.Mid County EMS and Carroll Township EMS responded to the scene, as well as firefighters from Harris-Elmore, Lindsey, Port Clinton and Bay, Carroll, Erie and Portage townships and deputies from the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office.Register photo/LUKE WARK Firefighters put out hotspots in the remains of the Michael Bruce Masonry on Ohio 19 south of Oak Harbor after the building and its contents burnt to the ground Saturday afternoon.
